W1 is commonly used for hand operated metal cutting tool, cold heading, embossing taps and reamers as well as cutlery. W1 is plain carbon steel and machines with ease. The W series of tool steel are very simple alloy group, low cost, and responsive to simple heating and water quenching for hardening.

The properties of AISI W1 steel include two common variations. This page shows summary ranges across both of them. For more specific values, follow the links immediately below. The graph bars on the material properties cards further below compare AISI W1 steel totool steels (top), all iron alloys (middle), and the entire database (bottom).
Hardened AISI W1 is AISI W1 steel in the hardened (H) condition. The graph bars on the material properties cards below compare hardened AISI W1 totool steels (top), all iron alloys (middle), and the entire database (bottom). A full bar means this is the highest value in the relevant set. A half full bar means it's 50% of the highest, and so on.
AISI Type W1 Tool Steel, The highest quality, water hardening carbon tool steel, controlled for hardenability and subject to the most rigid tests to ensure maximum uniformity in performance, with a composition held to closest limits.
W1 Tool Steel. W1 is a water hardening cold work tool steel that is supplied as drill rod in sizes from .062" to 2" round. APPLICATIONSShafts, pins, blacksmithing tools, and a variety of short term wear tooling. W1 Drill Rod is typically supplied in 36" lengths and can be special ordered as twelve foot bars.
Carbon tool steel products which include hot or cold finished bar, plate, sheet, rod, wire, or forgings, which are normally fabricated into tools, dies, or fixtures. Specification for seamless and welded steel tubes for automobile , mechanical and general engineering purposes.
AISI SAE D 2 Fine quality, air hardened, electric furnace melt tool steel. The combination of superior abrasion resistance and toughness found in D 2 results from its high carbon and high chromium composition. High chrome is an extraordinary tool steel that
AISI W1 drill rod is a 1% carbon water hardening tool steel that has superior machinability over all the other tool steel drill rods. W1 provides good wear resistance and toughness for the short run, but will not give tool life as extensive as O 1. W1 drill rod is produced in a ground and polished condition, with a fine surface finish better than 40 micro inches. Supplied in standard 36" lengths. AISI W1 conforms to
UNS T72301, The highest quality, water hardening carbon tool steel, controlled for hardenability and subject to the most rigid tests to ensure maximum uniformity in
Tool steel of this kind is not easy to weld, thus welding should be considered only for repairs. Following coated electrodes can be usedEN 280 MoB, EN 350 B, EN 450 B, EN 600 B, ENS 50 B, ENS 15CrB, ENS 18 WB. We deliver this steel alloy asBars, strips and reels; Cold rolled tool and spring steel strip; Uniwersal hot rolled wide strips
Two commercial cold work tool steels, AISI D2 and O1, were heat treated in order to obtain the same hardness 700HV (60HRc) and were subsequently tested in three different modes of wear, namely in adhesion, three body and two body abrasion, by using pin on disk, dry sand/rubber wheel apparatus and pin abrasion on SiC, respectively.
Tool Steel W1. Grade SummaryW1 Water Hardening is a cold work tool steel. This steel grade depends on its relatively high carbon content for its useful properties. Its known for its easy machining characteristic, ability to develop a keen cutting edge, high surface case
W 1 is a water hardening tool steel that is easy to machine. Its high carbon content allows it to develop a keen cutting edge. It has a moderate wear resistance.
W1 Tool Steel 67 products found. Tool steel holds a cutting edge, resists abrasion, and maintains its shape at elevated temperatures. It's commonly used for drawing, blanking, stamping, insert molding, forming, and embossing applications.
Carbon tool steel products which include hot or cold finished bar, plate, sheet, rod, wire, or forgings, which are normally fabricated into tools, dies, or fixtures. Specification for seamless and welded steel tubes for automobile , mechanical and general engineering purposes.
O1 Tool Steel O1 is a general purpose tool steel that is typically used in applications where alloy steels cannot provide sufficient hardness, strength, and wear resistance. APPLICATIONSWhere greater dimensional stability in heat treatment or improved wear resistance is required, tool steels with higher alloy contents, such as A2 or D2 should be considered.
W1 Tool Steel. W1 tool steel is a water hardening grade and one of the oldest grades of tool steel around. Despite the advances of the air and oil hardening grades, W1 maintains its usefulness in applications that require a softer core, high hardness and machinability, along with a relatively low cost.
Plastic mould steel that is usually supplied in a hardened and tempered condition. Suitable for Plastic moulds, frames for plastic pressure dies, hydroforming tools. See the datasheet here >
The basic p20 steel properties description are as follows: P20 tool steel is normally prehardened between 29 to 33 HRC. It has good mirror polish ability and its less texture makes finishing easier. It maintains uniform hardness throughout even across large blocks.
W1(AISI) Water hardening tool steel. Quite popular with custom knife makers, beginners and seasoned experts alike. Easy to work with, decent edge holding and ok. toughness, depending on the heat treatment. Maximum working hardness is in 63 65 HRC Range.
